Profiles in Courage
To Deem, or Not to Deem

Washington, Mar 12 - How proud are Democrats of their push for an unpopular government takeover of health care? This proud:

“House Democrats are so skittish about the Senate bill that they are considering a maneuver that would allow them to pass it without explicitly voting for it. The Senate measure would be “deemed passed” if and when the House adopts rules for debate on the follow-up budget reconciliation bill.” (NYT, 3/12/10)
Now there’s a profile in courage. Democrats are trying to turn a bill into law without ever actually voting on the bill itself! We’re pretty sure there’s no verse about “deeming” in Schoolhouse Rock.

It begs the question: why vote on anything at all? Instead of going to the polls next November, Americans can just deem who will represent them in Congress. And if that doesn’t go the Democrats’ way, they can simply deem themselves the Intergalactic Governing Council and rule for all eternity.

On second thought, if Democrats are so willing to put the government in charge of health care, they ought to have the guts to put their names next to it. Anything less is first-rate political cowardice.
