“There's Not a Liberal America and a Conservative America”
Just a Liberal Health Care Plan for All of America
Washington,
Mar 2 -
Flashback to the 2004 Democratic National Convention, when a relatively unknown Illinois state legislator running for the U.S. Senate gave a speech supporting Sen. John Kerry for President and former Sen. John Edwards for Vice President. The speech included some memorable lines about uniting the country – bridging the divide between liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans.
“…there's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America.”
“The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too…” (Transcript, 7/27/04)
The news, as it turns out six years later, is that we’re going to get a “blue state” health care plan for every state. These certainly are the United States of America, but they’ve got a partisan, “liberal America” government takeover of health care coming from President Obama.
Ignoring the serious policy objections shared by Republicans and the American people, the President it seems is ready to pursue a fiercely partisan path. Is President Obama really living up to his rhetoric by jamming the views of liberal Democrats down the throats of an American public who want Washington to start over?
That definitely takes audacity. But it’s not the audacity of hope.
