Job Market Continues to Erode as Obama Presses on with Failed Agenda

Washington, Oct 2, 2009 - Republican Study Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate rose to 9.8% and 263,000 more Americans lost their jobs in September.

“The President’s failed economic policy is crippling more American families each month,” said Chairman Price. “As we hear the painful news that 263,000 more Americans are out of work, we are reminded that government borrowing is the most slothful manner of achieving economic growth. All we have to show for the President’s archaic policies is rising unemployment and skyrocketing debt.

“The failure of the President’s agenda is bleeding throughout the economy, prompting the government to extend unemployment benefits, raise the debt ceiling, subsidize the purchases of new cars, and perpetuate bailouts of the private sector. This administration and Democrats in Congress continue to dig a hole of deeper government spending with no end in sight, and it will be our children and grandchildren who will be forced to pick up the tab.

“The sooner the President recognizes that his agenda is anathema to the principles that created American prosperity, the sooner we will see that wealth return. By rewarding productivity and putting more money in the pockets of those who earn it, rather than endlessly printing new money, we can put in place the type of positive incentives that create economic growth. Each day we delay true pro-growth economic policies is another day in which American competitiveness is damaged. Just as with health care reform, energy policy, and the budget, conservatives have a better way and a way that the American people can support.”
