Obama’s 0.0025% Spending “Cut”
Confusing Empty Symbolism with Fiscal Responsibility
Washington,
Apr 20 -
Republican Study Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s request that his cabinet officers cut a combined $100 million from their budgets over the next 90 days. While the White House claims that the move is part of the President’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, the cut amounts to about 0.0025% of his record-breaking $4 trillion in spending for this year alone. During the campaign, candidate Obama proposed a “net spending cut,” but his agenda will lead to the highest government spending levels in history.
“With the massive spending coming out of the Obama administration, $100 million barely qualifies as a rounding error,” said Chairman Price. “A miniscule spending cut in the wake of the President’s historically reckless budget proposal is a media ploy, not a commitment to fiscal responsibility. This publicity stunt is not only a shallow attempt at making headlines, but it is an affront to the American taxpayers who will be paying for the President’s agenda for decades to come.
“Candidate Obama had a lot of lofty words about cutting spending and restoring a responsible approach to government. Since taking office, he has repeatedly failed to follow through on these promises. The President had the opportunity to support a balanced budget, but he pushed forward with his big-spending plans. Fiscal responsibility requires a real commitment to cutting spending and reeling in an out-of-control federal budget, something the President seems to adamantly oppose.”
