Rep. Poe Seeks Cosponsors on Resolution Recognizing the 65th Anniversary of the End of World War II
Washington,
Jun 29 -
Two generations ago our nation, along with the entire free world, was embroiled
in an epic struggle against the forces of fascism. But with great trial came
great heroism. From the bravery of Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier
in World War II, to the courage of Holocaust survivors, the Allied powers would
not be denied. The American naval victory at Battle of Midway in June 1942 would
prevent Japanese access to much needed resources. Two years later, on June 6,
1944, the Allied invasion of France, known as D-Day, put Hitler on the
run—Germany would surrender less than a year later. Japanese forces continued to
fight in the Pacific but soon realized American power was too much. On September
2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered on board the USS Missouri. In the end, more
than 400,000 Americans gave their lives to defeat those intent on destroying the
free world. I hope you will join me in remembering and honoring the
65th anniversary of the end of World War II.
