Rep. Tiahrt Seeks Cosponsors Opposing the Value Added Tax

Washington, Jul 12 -

The Value Added Tax (VAT) system would impose job-killing taxes on every stage of business production and would ultimately place an increased tax burden on every American consumer. Experience shows that the VAT is also a crucial tool for expanding government; European governments have repeatedly increased VAT rates as governments’ thirst for revenue has grown. When Denmark established a VAT in 1962, the rate was set at 9%. Today, Denmark’s VAT has surged to 25%. It has been reported that the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, has increased the VAT from 17.5% to 20%. Rather than give the administration a tool to squeeze family budgets in order to grow the size of government, we should reduce their ability to raise taxes. The VAT will cripple families on fixed income, force employers to cut jobs, and only further stall America’s economic recovery. Congress needs take a stand against this massive tax increase being considered.
